Laine's Alcaidesa Newsletter - January 2011
Its been a long time since the last Newsletter but people still asked why I dont write something each month. I have been told for some people this is the only way they hear of things happening in Alcaidesa.
Firstly, I would like to Wish Everybody a Happy New Year and lets hope it is a good one.
My Christmas, well, I went to England and that was hard work. I went from Gibraltar Airport on the 22nd December and luckily for us we were the only flight that actually left the airport that day. It was sad watching all the other people wondering if they would eventually get to England or wherever they were travelling to. Lets hope that everybody travelling got home for the Christmas Holidays.
Airline Passengers and their Rights
This information interested me because I never know if I am entitled to anything back from the Airline. After this really bad weather any passenger can either get a re-fund or a new flight. This does also apply to the low cost airlines and even to people that were not insured. I think there might be a few of you who just put this down to bad luck and did nothing about the flight, so have a try and get a flight for later in the year.
Alcaidesa amenities, well, I cant tell you about all the new shops and bars because we still dont have any yet. Lets just hope that things might change by the summer, keep your fingers and legs crossed. However, this is a New Year and lets look on the bright side, Sun, Sea and the Beach!!
Sorry to all you smokers but this suites me. I dont smoke and needless to say happy with the ban. Since the 2nd January all smokers must be finding it hard to find anywhere to smoke in public. I believe Airports will still have there separate areas for the smokers and one new thing is Cigarettes etc., can be sold again from Petrol Stations after 5 years of prohibition. All bars etc., will now have to turn away smoking customers and to make it worse they will not receive any compensation from the Government to help with the expenditure of work carried out on installing separate smoking areas to cover the previous law.
Is Your Car Legal in Spain?
This was something else I was reading about and thought you might be interested in.
If you are one of the people still driving their English Reg. Car in Spain and do not display a Road Tax Disc or have an MOT and think this is legal, think again !!
If you are stopped by the Local Police or Guardia Civil you can be fined up to 2000 Euros and they have the authority to impound you vehicle on the spot and not release it until you have registered it onto Spanish plates.
I also read that the Spanish ITV is a Certificate of Roadworthiness and contrary to popular belief, is not a substitute for the UKs MOT Certificate. ITVs are only valid for Spanish Registered Cars.
For any Certificate of Roadworthiness to be legal, it must be done in the country where the car is registered.
They are also not silly, they know No Tax No MOT adds up to No Insurance!!
The rules are that if you have an English Registered Car you should change the plates to Spanish within six months of your arrival. Within these six months your car should be 100% legal under English law and if one document runs out they all run out. In the article I read, it says that the Local Police are cracking down on English Cars and are making random stops to check documents.
I also read a couple of articles that brought a smile to my face so I though I would share these with you.
Sculpture worth 800 Thousand Euros
I must say that to the defence of these thieves, not that I should defend thieves but I dont know one great sculpture from another.
The Sculpture by Eduardo Chillida was valued at 800,000 Euros.
The police were called to a warehouse in Madrid were 5 million of priceless pieces of art were stolen. They believed such a crime was committed by a gang of professional art thieves. However, this was not the case because the thieves took one sculpture, the one I am talking about, to a scrap-metal yard to dispose of it!! Would you believe they were only offered 30 Euros for it. Needless to say this is the clue which helped police recover all the missing art.
Christmas Trees Kill your Stress
I really had to read this twice because most people after the Christmas period cannot wait to dismantle the Christmas Tree till next year. How it was put is if your in-laws are driving you nuts, just stand in front of the Christmas Tree, this will automatically relieve your stress. Just five minutes looking at the tree can relieve stress and anxiety, this has been proved by research. There I was thinking about leaving the tree up all year round then I carried on reading. I was wrong, this also applies to all foliage i.e., trees and the country side. A nice walk in the woods can:-
Lower blood pressure
So if in the future whilst travelling through Alcaidesa if you see a strange lady sitting and talking to the trees for a period of time, dont worry carry on by, its only me relieving my stress!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well thats it till next month but you know if you want to write to me with anything happening locally or good restaurants you have been too, please feel free.
